The Body Shop Darkening Drops Review

by - 12.7.17

We've thoroughly hit the Summer months now. The time of sun and tanning. The problem that comes with the latter is that your makeup seems to make you look like Casper the (not so) friendly ghost. You have two options. 1) Buy new makeup or 2) Buy darkening drops to make the makeup you already have match your skin tone. But what if these darkening drops aren't any good?

When the Cover FX Custom Enhancer drops were released, beauty gurus went crazy, I mean CRAZY over it, but who really has that much money to spare? The Body Shop is a brand that I've heard people talk about, but I haven't really tried anything from their makeup range. I am I HUGE fan of their skincare so I had high hopes for their makeup as well.

Of course, everyone can be sceptical of new(ish) brands so that's why I'm reviewing the drops for you today

THE PACKAGING AND COST

The Body Shop does three different types of drops: lightening, darkening and bronzing. The other two aren't really for me but the darkening drops call my name

The product comes in a glass bottle with a pipette that you use to drop out highlight pigmented drops that alter the shade of your foundation. You get 15ml of product which is more than enough as you only need a very small amount for each use. The bottle seals shut very well so you shouldn't be worried if you need to travel with it.

The drops cost 15 Euros but I think you get a deal/discount if you buy both the lightening and darkening drops.

THE PRODUCT

"Step 1: Shake product well before use Step 2: Apply the “almost there” foundation shade to the back of your hand Step 3: Apply one drop of your chosen Shade Adjusting Drops and blend together. The lightening drops can only be used to lighten light to medium foundation shades. The darkening drops can only be used to darken dark to deep foundation shades. Step 4: Test the colour Step 5: Apply the mix on your face as usual for a natural make-up look"

When using the drops, you squeeze the pipette to pick up the liquid. You can only darken a dark/deep foundation. You can't add 10 drops to a foundation for fair skin. That's not what it's made for. The drops are only for adjusting a nearly perfect foundation shade. You can only darken your foundation by one, maximum two shades. Adding more drops will cause your foundation to turn grey and ashy.

The drops don't alter the consistency or performance of the foundation; it'll still have the same qualities. That's one of the things I like best because mixing two foundations can give you a different finish, which I don't really like.

It's best to mix the drops and your foundation on the back of your hand or a mixing palette and then apply to your face rather than mixing them straight on your face. I will say that personally, I found it annoying to mix things on my hand because product was wasted and my hands were dirty, so I had to waste a makeup wipe on cleaning it off.

Other than mixing in with foundation, the drops can also be used to cream contour your face for a very natural look.

The picture below shows what one drop of the pigment looks like before and after blending.

OVERALL

Would I repurchase?

I don't know actually. I'm 50-50 about it, but it doesn't have anything to do with the product itself. When I got it, I could never find affordable foundations and BB creams that matched my skin tone, but now, as I've delved more into makeup, I've discovered drugstore and cruelty free options. I would rather just buy something that matched my skin colour than make a mixture.

I think that these drops are a good thing to have in your collection, and if you're very pale or very dark skinned, then these would be more useful.

Have you tried any colour changing drops before?

  1. I think buying a foundation that matched your skin tone is such an easier option, but sometimes it can be so hard to find that match! Plus I think these are life savers if you've spent a lot of money on a foundation and it's the wrong shade, as it saves the waste! Great post, I love how honest you've been!xx

    1. I completely agree! Nowadays, there are lots of possibilities to alter foundation shades and I think these are convenient but I just wish they weren't as grey toned. I hope that more brands come out with these so that I can try them. Thank you so much! xx Nikita

  2. I've tried some from L'Oreal but they were definitely on the ashy side! I agree, that you can't get them to make a big difference, so sometimes it is better to buy another foundation or a bronzer might work too xx

    1. Oh no, that's so unfortunate! I think that the drugstore are getting better but they do need to up their game in terms of personalization. xx Nikita

  3. I love that you're experimenting with lesser known brands!
I don't know about you, but making mixtures (especially when you're in a rush) sounds like a lot of work to me.

    1. Thank you so much S! It sounds like a lot of work to me too. I'm currently trying this new thing where I mix the drops into the whole foundation rather than individually every single day. It seems to be working a lot better xx Nikita

  4. Interesting review. Personally, I may not purchase this product as well since there are many options in the market. But then mixing your own foundation is something I like to do sometimes since most foundations doesn't match my Asian olive skin tone.
