Setting Sprays: Do they Work? Essence Instant Matt Setting Spray Review

by - 20.8.17

Does it actually work?

I'm sure we've all seen some products and trends, and wondered whether they actually worked or not. Setting sprays have taken the drugstore world by storm and every brand was bringing out one to battle a high end spray like UD All Nighter. The one that stood out to me the most was this Essence Instant Matt Setting Spray because I have VERY oily skin. I hoped that this would help my makeup stay on all day long and control the oiliness of my skin. (Boy was I wrong about that)

PACKAGING AND COST

You get 50ml of product which is a good amount considering you only need a couple of sprays. The bottle is typical plastic with a pump spray. It feels quite sturdy and good for travel. The lid can be opened so after you've used up all the product, you can re-use the container for something else.

The Essence Instant Matt Setting Spray retails for 2.99 Euros, which is a good price in my opinion as compared to other setting sprays on the drugstore market.

THE PRODUCT

First of all, it STINKS. Like it reeks of chemicals and I can hardly stand to spray it on my face.

It immediately makes your makeup look cakey. One spray and you look like a hot mess that's just walked out of a sauna. I thought setting spray was supposed to prevent that? It's very noticeable around the nose area where it causes your pores to become prominent. It almost feels like the foundation is being un-blended and lifted off your face of that makes sense. You can see a layer where you've applied your foundation and concealer. It definitely clings to dry patches so all my dry skin gals out there, stay away from this (I mean faaaar awaaay).

However what I did like was the pump. Just the perfect amount comes out so you don't feel like you're being bathed in setting spray.

OVERALL

I'm quite skeptical about Setting Sprays to be honest, so I wasn't expecting much and boy am I glad I wasn't because this was an absolute disappointment. I'm not exaggerating this at all. I don't think I could have disliked a product more. I don't like sharing overly negative views on my blog but I don't want you guys to waste your money on 'bad' products. Now, I use bad in speech marks because my bad might not be your bad but trust me on this one.

Would I repurchase? Definitely not! It's not even worth those 3 Euros.

Please recommend some affordable setting sprays that you love because I do want to give them another shot.

  2. I've never tried this product, but I'm usually a really big fan of Essence! I really love setting spray, I feel like they just blend everything together and make your makeup looks more natural. I really love Mario Bedeascu's Rose Water Spray, the elf setting spray and the NYX Stay Matte! You should give one of these a go! :)

  4. Essence has really great blushes and lipsticks, I tried many of them but I guess their greatness stops there, too bad this product does not work at all. I will stay away from it when I see it in the shops!

  5. That's such a shame about this as most of Essence's products have been so good! Have you seen the primer waters, there's quite a few dupes out there, Primark do one too xx

  8. It's a shame you didn't enjoy using it. I do like that more and more affordable brands are coming out with setting sprays. I love the maybelline master fix setting spray and i recently picked up the rimmel setting spray which has gotten great reviews. Neither have a scent as far as I've noticed.

  9. I've been really looking at Essence reviews. Since they are so affordable, I am always skeptical of the quality. I absolutely hate really chemical-like smelling products! Makes me feel like I'm spraying my face with acid, lol! I appreciate how thorough your reviews are love!
